Welcome! Start here <3

Hey y’all!

We are a group of 16 Asheville community members who were indicted on charges of “felony littering” as part of the City government’s attempt to repress food sharing and mutual aid organizing. We were targeted in connection with a December 2021 art-based demonstration in Aston Park criticizing a brutal pattern of homeless encampment evictions. We were also immediately and unconstitutionally banned from all public parks for 3 years, and the ACLU represented us in a lawsuit filed against the City of Asheville. You can read the complaint here.

The lawsuit was settled in July of 2024—the City agreed to substantive changes to the policy they used to ban us (and so many others) from public space. A big win!

After years of delays and derailments due to the police department’s negligence and inexperience, all criminal charges were dropped in September, 2024. An even bigger win!

The posts here are in order and feature updates about the littering case and ACLU lawsuit, press, and updates about criminalization of survival and care in Asheville beyond our case. Thank you for caring; it kept us going.
